If you have never been to British Columbia and you like nature, consider going to Vancouver Island and more specifically to North Vancouver Island.  Tofino offers the opportunity to visit with whales (some great pictures).  There are also grizzly and black bears to put into your photos.   I specifically recommend spending some time at the Tsa-Kwa-Luten Lodge on Quadra Island near Campbell River.

We also took a 5 day working trip aboard MV Aurora Explorer through the Broughton Archipelago.  Marine Link Tours runs the ships (250-286-3347).  The Explorer serviced numerous lumber camps.  The vistas were spectacular but the animals were a little scarce.  It was exhilirating to be out and to watch the lumber camps work, to see the many remaining natural resources and to watch the sea life.  If you have any questions or interest, feel free to contact me.

Tom, a great recommendation for a magnificent vacation, with one caveat: be cautious about traveling to Vancouver Island in May. Unfortunately, it rained buckets every day we were there, and while everything was green and the temperatures were quite tolerable, the constant rainfall limited our enjoyment of the hiking trails and the gorgeous views of the Pacific Ocean breaking on the boulders along the shore. We loved our close encounters with eagles, though, and enjoyed watching otters playing in the bay outside our timeshare. The only whale we saw was WAY out in the Pacific, and that was just one blow. However, we'd already enjoyed whale watching on the Atlantic side of Canada and didn't feel deprived not seeing them in Vancouver. I'm sure it was the time we chose to travel -- thus my caution to those who are planning a similar vacation.
